Grouper - A 1 A 2xCd
"This is the first CD issue of Grouperʼs 2011 self released two part album subtitled Dream Loss and Alien Observer, comprised of songs written and recorded over the last four years.
A chronological order informs the thematic trajectory of the dual release. Dream Loss is the first album and is a collection of older songs, while Alien Observer is mostly made of newer songs. Each is meant to stand solidly on itʼs own, and also as a satellite in the otherʼs system, subjects on either side of the waterʼs surface, on either side of a trick mirror; at times reflecting one back to the other, at times looking straight through to the other.
Enough has been written about Grouper in the past few years that there is no need to wax poetic here. Suffice it to say that Liz Harris has created an exquisite sonic universe where she is the sole inhabitant, and we should consider it a privilege to listen in.
press quotes for A l A:
“This sound/synapse transposition is as haunting as it is beautiful - surely Grouper’s best.” Tiny Mix Tapes
“A I A is a desolate, expansive affair; it sounds like a clandestine broadcast and the way an unborn baby might hear a pop song in utero. Hyperbolic imagery aside, you would be hard pressed to find very many contemporary records that yield the type of vaporous journey found on A I A, nor one that's as hauntingly beautiful.” Altered Zones
“If past Grouper releases have inhabited abyssal trenches and damp backwoods, here Harris takes us journeying across constellations and stars.” The Quietus
“This music feels both spacey and expansive and also oddly intimate and grounded, the work of someone who has mastered her tools and knows how to get the most out of them.” Pitchfork
“The combination of Dream Loss, Alien Observer and the unspoken, implied centrepiece has an emotional trajectory and power that few records can match.” The Liminal
