"When I first heard news of the existence of a new fifty minute Jesu song, I was reluctant and excited at once. It's not as if Jesu hasn't ever attempted long songs before, with the first release consisting of two twenty minute long sides and the full length's average song length being over seven minutes (and most of these ranking among my favorites), but could Justin Broadrick engage my full attention for that enduring a playtime? Yes,and no. "Infinity", the fifty minute suite in question doesn't always hit the mark. The first twenty minutes are just great. He hasn't infused his music with this much anxiety for years now and the passage where the drum machines take over and he starts yelling, Godflesh style, is a moment of catharsis that I'd love to see him try more within this project. I felt the next thirty minutes were mostly meandering, with droning segments that he's done better in the past with little resolution although he finishes the piece in tidy fashion with delicately picked notes that I found really touching.
